The European Market for Biofuel Plants

Over the past five years, the European market for biofuels has become one of the largest throughout the world. In early 2012, about 380 biofuel plants with a production capacity of about 1,055 PJ were operational. Despite already existing overcapacities, the number of biofuel plants in Europe will continue to increase in the years to come – especially for generating bioethanol and second generation biofuels.

The EU Directive for Renewable Energies is the main factor for an increasing use of biofuels. It obligates the member states to increase their share of renewable energies in the transport sector to 10 per cent by 2020.

Biofuels, whether from European production or imports, will contribute the largest part towards achieving this aim, as they are the only market-ripe alternative to fossil fuels.
