Rendering of animal by-products - Introduction
March 16, 2011
It is a common practice nowadays for slaughterhouses, butcher shops and food processing factories to discharge unchecked and without any management planning of animal waste and by-products in illegal dumps, litter bins, streams, etc.
A direct consequence of this action is both the cost resulting from large fines imposed by the European Union, and environmental costs resulting from the degradation of the natural landscape and the immediate risk to public health.
The new condemnation of Greece by the court of the European Union - for the burying of waste without prior processing, the absence of official controls, and poor facilities management approval processes for animal by-products - came to reinforce the need to address the current situation both locally and at global level.
Today there are new techniques of animal waste utilization in the light of both the resulting environmental and energy benefits and other economic development in the region. The technology of heat treatment (rendering) includes the recycling of animal by-products and residues in a variety of food products with added value, which uses heat in the form of steam and separation technologies are applied with a view to remove moisture and protein material (meat meal) from fat and tallow.
